Biography

Adelaide born soprano Jessica Mills holds a Bachelor of Musical Theatre from the Queensland Conservatorium. Equally at home in operatic roles and musical theatre, Jessica brings depth, elegance, and emotional intensity to every performance. A versatile artist, she has also excelled behind the scenes as a choreographer and dance captain, showcasing her multifaceted talent and leadership in the performing arts.

Performing in Australia and overseas, in 2024 Jessica was the only Australian performer shortlisted for the prestigious Lotte Lenya competition, celebrating rising talent in opera, operetta and musical theatre, and participated in the semi-final round in New York.

She made her adult professional debut with The 7 Sopranos in 2017 and her Sydney Opera House debut in 2019. Since then, she has performed with leading companies including State Opera South Australia, Opera Australia, Victorian Opera, Sydney Opera House, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, and the Adelaide Festival.

Her performed operatic roles include: Lucy - The Telephone (Mopoke Theatre Productions), Laetitia - The Old Maid and The Thief (Mopoke Theatre Productions), Isobel - The Pirates of Penzance (State Opera South Australia and Queensland Performing Arts Centre/Prospero Arts), First Bridesmaid - Le Nozze di Figaro (State Opera South Australia), Angela - Love Burns (State Opera South Australia), Nella - Gianni Schicchi (CoOpera), Tweedledee/Brat - Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Australian Contemporary Opera Co).

Jessica has been featured as a soloist in numerous concerts, televised events, and corporate gigs, including Adelaide Carols By Candlelight (Channel Seven), Bright Lights and Big Dreams (State Opera South Australia), Handel’s Messiah (Mopoke Theatre Productions) and L’Allegro il Penseroso ed il Moderato (The Big Sing), the lead in State Opera South Australia’s Opera in the Pub series, and more.

Her other stage credits include: Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Sydney Opera House/Victorian Opera), U/S Mary Maguire, Ensemble – The Beautiful Game (Manilla Street Productions),  Actor/Dancer - Don Giovanni (Opera Australia), Actor - Il Viaggio a Reims (Opera Australia). She also makes regular appearances with the State Opera South Australia chorus.

Jessica is a past Semi-Finalist of the Rob Guest Endowment Award and a two-time recipient of the Friends of State Opera South Australia’s Emerging Artist’s Grant. Jessica would like to thank her family and the team at Active Artists Management for their ongoing support.
